The Girl Scouts could soon triple membership fees

The Girl Scouts of the USA are planning to increase membership dues significantly for the first time in eight years. This proposed increase will raise annual fees from $25 to $85 per scout, marking a 240% hike. The organization aims to support local councils and enhance program delivery with the additional revenue. However, this decision is facing criticism, as many argue it may exclude families unable to afford the new fees. Concerns have been raised that such a substantial increase could lead to a decline in membership, particularly among middle and lower-income families.

The Girl Scouts have been experiencing challenges, such as declining membership and financial difficulties. With projected operating losses of $5.6 million this year, the organization sees the fee increase as a necessary measure. Yet, some believe there could be alternative ways to address financial shortfalls, such as optimizing costs or revising executive compensation.

To mitigate the impact, the organization is considering offering phased increases with potential discounts for members in the first two years. Additionally, financial aid will continue to be available to help reduce barriers for those who wish to join. The proposed changes also include adjustments to adult volunteer dues. Critics argue that the proposed strategies might not be sufficient to prevent potential attrition among members.
